NBC’s junior rowing program has a long history of success, boasting national championships, medals at the junior world championships, and acceptances to top colleges. Classes are available for juniors age 13 and older who wish to pursue rowing at either a recreational or competitive level and allow all high school aged athletes to discover the joys and benefits of rowing.
Junior rowers have the opportunity of competing in intramural, regional, national and even international competition. Rowers participating in the summer programs have the opportunity of competing in two intramural races, each with a number events which allow rowers of a wide variety of skill levels to compete. Rowers who show promise and determination may begin to race at more intense regattas throughout New England, such as the Lowell Invitational in Massachusetts or the Head of the Fish in upstate New York. A select number of rowers may also compete at the Northeast Youth Championships in May, where the top three finishers in each event earn spots to compete at the Youth National Championships in early June. Furthermore, rowers may also represent NBC at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta, held annually in Boston on the penultimate weekend of October.
Classes are held after school during the spring and fall, and in the mornings during the summer. NBC also hosts indoor rowing classes during the winter which allow athletes to maintain their fitness during rowing’s “off-season” while the Seekonk River is frozen. Workouts take place after school on NBC’s ergometers under the supervision of a qualified coach.
See progression of classes here. Youth participants must be 13 or older; 13-year-old and 7th grade students must start in the summer session.
