NBC Youth Scullers Win National Silver and Bronze Medals

Rancho Cordova, CA/June 8-10: Six NBC rowers went to this year’s USRA Youth Nationals. Katie Dolan took silver in the Women's Youth 1X A Final with a time of 8:33.695 which put her in a strong second place behind Cassandra Reed from West Cambridge Rowing (MA) who finished in 8:24.988. In the Women's Lightweight Youth 2X A Final, NBC's Ellie Hamilton & Claire Noble Shriver took the bronze with a time of 7:59.165. Ellie and Claire finished behind the winners from Y Quad Cities (Iowa), 7:53.795, and second place Three Rivers (PA), 7:55.064.

In the Men's Youth 1X B Finals Jonathan Greenberg finished 4th with a time of 8:11.689. In the Men's Lightweight Youth 2X B Finals Michael Kiselev & Jack Stone finished third, less than one second behind the second-place crew from Ridgewood, NJ. Michael and Jack were also less than two seconds behind first place Oak Neck Academy (NY). No doubt this was one of the tightest races of the day.

Congratulations to all of our scullers. It is always a momentous journey to do the training throughout the year, go to the different regional events, and finally make it to the Nationals. It is a very special occasion. Each of our scullers should be very proud of his/her achievement and use it as an inspiration to continue to improve as he or she pursues even more rowing and competition. No matter what happens with the future, this work and these achievements will have a positive effect for the future and the memories will last a lifetime.

These scullers have been coached throughout the year by Peter Wilhelm, whose scullers over the past 12 years have developed a strong competitive reputation. Among the support personnel making the trip to California was Katie's father, Pete Dolan, who made the following comment: "Peter Wilhelm is superman! [He] Spent hours in the heat every afternoon for hours working on boats including his new lightweight 2x that he took possession of at the regatta for the girls to row in. Not a more dedicated person I have ever known. I was ready to ring the bell and tap out every afternoon, but he never stops...and I am a former Green Beret. Give Peter a cracker and thimble of water and he is good for hours."

Additional Regatta Notes: Katie has just graduated from Barrington High School and will be attending a national junior rowing camp for more competition this summer. This fall she will begin classes and continue with more rowing at the University of Washington in Seattle. Katie was the bow sculler for the NBC Youth 4X, won a Youth Nationals silver medal in 2017. Ellie & Claire have yet another year to compete at the youth level. They may return once again next year. As newcomers last year, they actually finished in 6th place. Ellie is a student at Barrington High School. Claire is a student at Old Rochester Regional High School (MA). Jonathan will be a senior next year, so he also has more youth competition in his future. Michael will be a sophomore next year. Jack will be a senior, so they could also be a returning duo in 2019. Michael is a student at LaSalle Academy and Jack is a student at Wheeler. This was Jack's second trip to the Youth Nationals, since he raced with Jonathan in the lightweight 2X to finish 1st in the 2017 C Final.

To qualify for this regatta, each of these scullers competed in the Northeast Regionals which were held in Worcester. Then they moved on to the Nationals. Once at the Nationals, they also had to compete in a 2000-meter time trial on Friday, June 8, which ranked them for either the finals or the semi-finals for their event. On Friday morning, Jonathan placed 10th among 20 other scullers, so that afternoon, he rowed an extra 2000-meter race, called a Repechage, where he placed second, in what was almost a dead heat for first. This is what it took for him to qualify for one of the Semi-Finals.
