Lots of Solid Racing at Lowell's Amber Z Regatta

Lowell, MA/May 12-13: The Amber Zapatka Memorial Regatta on the 2000-meter Merrimack River Course includes high school programs such as Bay View and public high schools, as well as juniors who are rowing for clubs, which is our own NBC Scholastic. Saturday's somewhat soggy weather was not as bad as expected with a headwind that eventually became a whimper.

From 8:00 AM - 1:30 PM on Saturday, all scullers and crews participated in 1900-meter time trials to develop a speed order for the boats. The morning trials ranked our rowers and scullers from the Narragansett Boat Club and St. Mary Academy - Bay View into different competitive levels: top 6 boats to Final A, 7-12 to Final B, 13-18 to Final C, 19-24 to Final D. Anyone wishing to find all of the race results can go to www.HereNOW.com.

John Fay and Lucien Gaitskell won Bronze Medals in the Men’s Jr. 2X A Final. There was plenty of good racing for everyone that will help inspire our crews to achieve faster boat speeds in the future. Leading the way this weekend were Margaret Czech and Emma Vietan who placed first in the Women's Jr. 2X B Final and 1st in the Women's Jr. 4X B Final, with Lucy Handy and Katie Healy. In the Women's Jr. Novice 4+ B Final NBC's entry (C-Stephanie Webber, S-Mayberry Mark, 3-Emily Regan, 2-Victoria Rego, B-Erika Arias) was an inspiring sight. They battled the Manchester Alliance all the way down the course to finish as a strong second place. Likewise for the Men's scullers, John Fay and Lucien Gaitskell. Since Lucien was one pound over the weight limit for lightweights, they had to row with the heavyweights and still held their own to finish third and a Bronze Medal. NBC’s top lightweight women’s four (C-Anna Brousseau, S-Fiona Eves, 3-Hannah Glucksman, 2-Gaelyn Dwyer, B-Caroline Esposito) also did well in their A Final with a 4th place. In the eights, Bay View did a great job in the Women's Jr. Varsity 8+ C Final, outdistancing second place Arlington by over 14 seconds. That Bay View 2V lineup was C-E. Morris, S-P. Noland, 7-B. Mattos, 6-E. Dezotell, 5-Z. Ferreira, 4-E. Smith, 3-A. Beaulieu, 2-T. Bauer, B-I. Palumbo.

Many thanks to our coaches Lisa Evans, Joan Brush, Amy Abbot, and Kristin San Bento for NBC and Brent Basso for Bay View. Also, a big thank you to the parents who provided tremendous support. It was a long two days, but it was a first-class regatta that made the trip worth the effort. Congratulations, too, to Kristin who was the Executive Assistant Referee to the Chief Referee throughout two full days of racing, plus many hours of preparation.

All of these scullers and crews will be able to compete in NBC's 11th Annual RI Interscholastic Regatta on Wednesday, May 16, and some will race at the Northeast Regionals in Worcester on May 19. Bay View and the fours of Lincoln School will continue to train for the NEIRA Championship Regatta on May 26.
