Daniela and Sarah Win Gold at Head of the Schuylkill

October 25-26/Philadelphia, PA: It’s not too often that NBC scullers break away from the Fish to drive south for this enormous regatta on the historic Schuylkill River. The official race course is 2.5 miles rowing with the current, beginning at the 2,000 meter sprint-regatta start line and finishing at the upper end of Boathouse Row. The regatta attracts major competition from the mid-Atlantic states, Canada, and southeastern New England.

Daniela Roop (stroke) and Sarah Cussler (bow) had no prior exposure to rowing on this course and went into it just happy to be there. They also did a great job racing by finishing first of five boats in Saturday’s Women’s Masters Doubles (40-49) in a time of 17:43.14. This was nineteen seconds ahead of the Island Lake Double from Orangeville, Ontario. On Sunday, Sarah Cussler joined husband Jeff Brock to race in the Mixed Master’s Doubles where they finished an extremely close second place to Saugatuck. The NBC combo’s time was 16:13.04 to Saugatuck’s winning time of 16:11.1. There were nine boats in the event. Two hours later Jeff rowed in a Malta Boat Club Double with his brother Hugh In the Men’s Master Doubles placing 5 of 8 with a time of 16:53.40.

In addition to these NBCers, the St. Mary Academy-Bay View Crew, who row out of our boathouse, made the trip to finish off their fall season. The Varsity Eight finished 17th of 46 crews with a time of 15:37.74. The Junior Varsity finished 33rd of 46 with a time of 17:19.89. In the Women’s High School Frosh/Novice eights Bay View finished 10th of 28 in a time of 17:47.52. Congratulations to Head Coach Brent Basso, Assistant Coach Daniela Roop, the rowers and coxswains, and the Bay View parents on completing the season on a high note.
