Glastonbury Leads The Way. Bay View Takes Second.

Providence/April 26: The 4th Annual Bay View Invitational Regatta featured 40 eights, about 360 athletes, and multitudinous parents and friends. The girls from Glastonbury led the way down the course, as they swept each event with first place finishes. For the home crews, it was an excellent race by the Bay View Varsity girls who placed a close second behind Glastonbury and ahead of Tabor. In the same event, the NBC Scholastic girls had a close race with Northfield-Mt. Hermon.  For the boys races Tabor and Hingham shared top honors, once again with close races. One of the most exciting races was Hingham taking top honors in the Boys 1V with Tabor and Northfield-Mt. Hermon very close behind.

This event is always a challenge, since it is still early in the rowing year, but our volunteers did a great job escorting the crews up the river and bringing them to the line. With the outgoing tide and tailwind, the crews had to display their backing skills so that they could stay close to the starting line. Once they do get underway at the start, it is an impressive sight to see six or eight eights putting all they have into making their boats go fast.

Many thanks to: our referees (Dave Loftus, Kristin San Bento, Rob English, Amy Abbot, Albin Moser); our dock master Matt Dolan and his assistants, including Debbie Madeiros; our motorboat drivers (Bruce McCabe, Fran O'Donnell, Alice Murray, Breck Wagner, Steve Devin); the coaches from the different schools who drove for the referees; our Finish Line Crew (Daniela Roop, Caroline and Matt Ponko, Kathy Lee, and others); Jerilynn Devin our video camera operator at the Finish; Debbie O'Connell, our results coordinator and bow marker distributor. There were many others as well plus many who were ready to step in if needed. The NBC does a great job managing a regatta. Also, many thanks to everyone who left the park in good shape with only the hint of trailer tracks as a reminder that a few hours before we had over 600 people in the area enjoying the racing--especially on this rainy spring morning.
