Jon Dow Wins 2013 NBC Men's Championship Singles

December 7/Providence, RI: The winners of the NBC Championship Sculling Trophies are the fastest NBC scullers in our scullers in the Mayor’s Cup and Sweeps & Sculls. Corlis Gross made it easy since she was the top NBC sculler in the women’s events for both regattas. For the Men's Championship Trophy, it was a little more complex. Scott Whitney, one of our speedy Master scullers, was the fastest NBCer in the Mayor’s Cup, and Jon Dow, the fastest in the Sweeps & Sculls. A race off was required. Thanks to Dan Gorriaran and Peter Wilhelm, the two scullers met at Swan Point ready to race. Off they went. Scott rowing at 30 and Jon, a championship junior sculler, took advantage of his youth by putting it with a 34-35 rating, which he held throughout the 2000 meter distance. Jon finished first at 8:40 with Scott finishing at 9:00. The water was flat and, since high tide was at 10:47, there was still an incoming current. Congratulations to each sculler for doing his best! Jon is a senior at Mount St. Charles Academy, where he is also the Co-Captain of the swim team. So he plans to spend a good deal of his time in the pool this winter. He will continue to train for spring rowing competition after the end of swim season. Jon will be attending Brown University in the fall, where he will double major in an academics and rowing with the men's crew. Jon has been coached for the past three years by Peter Wilhelm.
