Narragansett Boat Club Youth and Bay View Academy Take Home Medals from Bay View Invitational and Cape Cod Regatta

Bay View 8 It’s been an exciting first few weekends of racing for the youth programs at NBC!

On Saturday April 27th, in surprisingly calm conditions, Bay View Academy hosted the Bay View Invitational on the Seekonk River. In the 3rd Varsity 8+ event, the NBC Scholastic Program, with their only entry in the regatta, took first and Bay View second, beating the crews from Glastonbury, Tabor, Stonington and Sacred Heart. In the 2nd Varsity 8+ event, Bay View won with a time of 5:21.1. Glastonbury came in second place three seconds behind them and Stonington took third. In the Varsity 8+ event, Tabor took first with a time of 5:12, with Bay View finishing close behind them with a time of 5:17. Northfield Mt. Hermon finished in third with a time of 5:20.5.

Then on Sunday May 5th, the NBC Youth Program raced at the Cape Cod Regatta in Mashpee, MA. The Regatta saw broad competition across both sculling and sweeps events, and NBC was well represented.

Out of our eight entries, NBC scullers brought home six medals. Peter McKendall won gold, and Olivia Harwood and Nash Klinger won silver in their respective events. NBC youth scullers also secured three bronzes and three fourth place finishes.

In the sweeps program, the Boys Novice 4+ won their race by a decisive 30 seconds! The boat was coxed by Caitlyn Mason with Harrison Hopfenberg, Jack Bauer, Thomas Basso, and David Cabatingan.

The Boys Novice 8+ came in second to a solid Arlington-Belmont crew by a mere 8 seconds to earn a silver medal. The 8+ was coxed again by Caitlyn Mason with Harrison Hopfenberg, Jeremy Pallant, Peter McKendall, Nash Klinger, Nick Rocchio-Giordano, Jack Bauer, Thomas Basso, and David Cabatingan.

The Girls Varsity 4+, coxed by Caitlyn Mason with Anne Hutchings, Paige Mattos, Christina Lusi, and Caroline Hamann, earned a gold medal in their event, rowing with great control over the last 500 meters. The Girls Varsity 8+, with several novice rowers in the crew, fell behind off the line yet managed to race their way back to a silver medal in a tightly contested event. The Girls Varsity 8+ was coming off a successful row last week at the Bay View Invitational in which they came in first among five other crews in the Third Varsity 8+ event. The 8+ was coxed by Caitlyn Mason with Abby Prescott, Olivia Harwood, Julia Ciocca, Rachel Balcom, Anne Hutchings, Paige Mattos, Christina Lusi, and Caroline Hamann.

Parent turnout was fantastic, too! Chants of "NBC! NBC!" filled the finish area and our rowers were nourished by a tent well-stocked with snacks and drinks. Thank you for all of your help!

Congratulations to all rowers, coxswains, and families who were present. Get ready for some exciting racing in the coming weeks!

Coming up on Wednesday May 15th is the Rhode Island Interscholastic Regatta hosted by NBC. Crews from Bay View Academy, Lincoln School, NBC and East Bay Rowing will be racing from 3:30 to 6:00 in the afternoon. Come down to the Seekonk and support our youth!
