2012 Head of Charles Features Five NBC Gold Medalists

Cambridge, MA/October 20-21: Getting into the Head of the Charles Regatta requires a good deal of luck, since everyone has to go through the lottery. Keeping yourself in the regatta year after year takes a good amount of training. Winning your event goes far beyond that. Our NBC Women’s Masters 4+ (Robin Gross, Joan Brush, Anne Fleet, Carol Browning, and Andrea Rickey at coxswain) have been doing so year and year out. This year they outdistanced the closest boat by 33 seconds. Next came Tracy Glover, racing with “The Lucky Charms,” in the Directors’ Challenge Women’s 4X. Tracy has captured numerous regional and national medals over the years. Rowing in the Men’s Grand Master 2X, Andy Washburn and Bill Prichett left steam in their wake as they won the event by one minute and thirteen seconds. Returning to win another gold medal in their event were Dan Gorriaran and Mike Smith, record holders of the Men’s Master 2X (40+). Rounding up the gold medal finishers, are the NBC Men’s Youth Doubles with Chase Buchholz and Isaac Mocarski. Seldom does a youth rower return to win the same event two years in a row. Kudos to Chase! Likewise to Isaac, who has just finished his first year of competition.

But that’s not all there was for the Narragansett Boat Club. There were at least 63 NBC members in this year’s regatta, which included many other finishers in the single digits. David Gray to 4th in the Men’s Grand Master 1X (50+); Scott Whitney ninth in the Men’s Senior Master 1X (40+); Eric Esposito fourth in the Men’s Club 1X; Jeff Brock ninth in Men’s Master 2X (40+) with Malta’s Fred Duhling; Tracy Glover fifth in the Women’s Master 2X with her Upper Valley partner Carin Reynolds; following up somewhat later in the same event in 9th place were Kim Worrell and Ann Palms; the ever enthusiastic Ruth Berenson took second in the Veteran Women II 1X; Barbara Green came in 7th in the Senior Veteran 1X; Bryna McConarty rowed a strong race to place 3rd in the Women’s Master 1X; Dan Gorriaran, Scott Whitney, and Jeff Brock took a second trip up the river in the Director’s Challenge Men’s Quads to place 4th for Gorriaran and Whitney (rowing with Wide Load and Nereid0 and 9th for Brock (rowing with Malta).

It is also notable that the NBC Masters Women 8+ (50+) placed high enough to qualify for next year’s regatta. Kudos to Katie Wall, Joan Richards, Amy Abbott, Alice Lee, M.J. Haronian, Gerri Schiffman, Kyna Leski, Lynn Iler, Coxswain Caitlin Ponko, and their coach Charlie Whiten. There were some newcomers, too. Grace Ryan and Laura Rand finished above the middle of the pack in the Women’s Youth 2X. This was the first year that we had NBC Scholastic sweeps entries in the Men’s Youth 4+ and the Women’s Youth Eights. Even though they did not rank very high, they put in a good effort and their experience will lead to even better finishes in succeeding years.
